Tennov

Otala’s lastest song Tenov is groundbreaking in its discussion about grief, the depseration one feels when someone they were devoted to dies. This loss of self in the loss of someone else and the onset of crisis this can become.

Otala

We are all haunted by the looming headstone of an empty grave,we have see friends and family fall, their demise a reminder that we shall one day join them. What do we let fade when we focus on what is gone? Those that sleep will surley stir again, eyes stark in the daylight, but what about those that stay shut?

Tennov is written in a 4/4 time signature to reflect the ongoing cycle of love, loss and grief. The beuaty of love is that it can be lost and it is perhaps with this knowledge that we should look after it, cherish it try to make it last. Just because someone has been buried, or burned or lost does not mean the love you had for them has to die too. Losing someone is a lonely place, you isolate yourself in an effort to immortalize them in your memory.

Tennov

As a punk quintent Otala really capture the anger and exhasution of grief in Tennov which explores themes of anger, denial, helplessness. Its narrrative offers a foreboding hand down a darkened path, the mind of death and darkness. This forest of forelonging crowds our vision and we are buried in the woods, pining for all that is gone.

Grief is a mutual experience, a loved one shielded in wood once stood tall now lies still. We are left to die without them by our side. Dorothy Tennov wrote about the expereince of being in Love, researching individual cases, we may all expereince different verions of love but we will all suffer the same loss. We are in debt to those we have lost, the love we shared, the lessons learned from each other. We pay not in our suffering, each tear cried is not a currency, but with our desicion to rejoice, celebrate life as if they were still living it so they can vicariously laugh and cry with you.

The lyrics that stick out to me in Tennov are:

Sometimes I wonder what would be and what will be if you took my hand. Red and swollen it rests in my palm. An careless act of selfishness but it could never be a lie”.

Otala are really making their mark in the music industry, with up coming gigs on the 3rd of February in The George Tavern London, The Bodega in Nottignham on the 24th of March and april the 9th in the New Adelphi Club in Hull. Click here to buy tickets!

The Publics release TV inspired single Young Hearts

What is worse than a heartbreak? A heartbreak that happens on national TV. New single, Young Hearts,by indie powerhouse the publics recounts a friend of the band and their unfortunate date on Channel fours exceptional programme Teens First Dates.

The Publics, Elliot Stephenson, Ebony Broughton and Josh Porter.

Clothes pressed, hair done, speech prepped,a few deep breathes and its lights camera action. The room is lit but the spotlight is just on you then she walks in, and you don’t know what to do. The steady pace of the drum in this track echoes the stilted breath and heavy heartbeat of any first date goer. Crack a few jokes in the hope they’ll crack a smile, hoping the money you’ve spent on cocktails is worthwhile.

Conversation stunted and a few awkward silences, you start to realise they’re not looking at you but at the door, maybe this is not the one you’ve been looking for. Their phone rings as you ask for their number, she half mutters“I’ll catch you later’ and instead of calling her you call a taxi to take you home.

The optimism echoed throughout the track is aided by the influence of 80s synth that complement the lifted harmonies and evoke images of hopefulness, a bad first date doesn’t mean you can’t have a decent second one. The shredded guitar paces the vocals to the chorus build up which will have you bouncing on the dance floor. The poetic lyrics to this track juxtapose the frustration felt in the face of rejection with the determination to overcome and find salvation in the same arms that shoved you away.

Young Hearts. The Publics

Once again, the narrative explores themes of heartbreak, rejection, and dancing through it all, this semantic is what gives The Publics their distinctive sound and recognisable identity. They stand as a reminder that hearts heal, adorned in audible armour, buttressing us for better. It is no wonder that on playing this banger on BBC Radio Nottingham Dean Jackson described it as “brilliantly written and wonderfully performed”

The song was recorded at Electric-Bear Studios in the band’s hometown, Mansfield, which has recently undergone a huge renovation. The studio improvements help further elevate The Public’s reimagined sound as ‘Young Hearts’ aims to propel the band into the limelight of the UK Indie Rock scene.

The Publics, made up of Elliot Stephenson (lead guitar and songwriter), Josh Porter (guitar and singer) and Ebony Broughton (Keyboard and Singer), are making moves in the indie genre. Within 5 months they’ve gone from playing at a garden party to supporting indie powerhouse The Reytons. Their previous release, Marathon in heels, saw them sell out their Nottingham headline show.

They’ve also headlined Mansfield Wetherspoons, Stag and Pheasant, twice and have supported the likes of Corella, Deco and Overpass. This upward trajectory continues with their next gig set for the 21st of December supporting The Clause. With a flurry of gigs planned for 2023, the first in January supporting Albany,The Publics are a name to add to your playlist, so you can say you knew them before everybody else.

Drian release new single Dreaming

Ever been so in love that your subconscious falls too?

Jordon, Robert,Adam,Nikki and Nathan.

A gentle piano, played in the distance lulls a listener closer to the sound before an effervescent guitar tears the peace up. A dream disrupted by the waves of reality. Emerging from the Manchester music scene Drian are breaking through the indie narrative with unconventional guitar ballads and beats that demand a mosh pit.

Their latest track, Dreaming, talks of an idyllic vision of love, a figure that follows your thoughts before consuming them entirely, they sit at your desk, follow you to your bed, where you drift off just to see them again. With the jolt of the guitar and a consistent drum beat, like the heart after the first glimpse of a potential new love, the song accelerates from ballad to an impassioned indie anthem.

Consciousness becomes servitude, an unjustified sacrifice tearing you away from your fictitious lover and your fairytale. You only open your eyes, try to work but are constantly distracted by rushed shadows and quick silhouettes, is that them by the water cooler or running to the loo? Will they disrupt your afternoon? A flicker of eyes and your held in their view, looking at them but they stare on through. That is the darkness of dreaming, reality becomes a disappointing nightmare when those you love do not see you. Frontman Jordan’s angelic vocals add to the surreal nature of the music, a listener feels both haunted by this presence yet hopeful for what may happen.

Jordon, Robert,Adam,Nikki and Nathan.

Your slumber becomes an escapism, when the love you have for this person controls your soul. Behind closed eyes they linger, candlelit roses at dinner. Dreaming is the only way to make them stay and this persistent presence is embodied by the distorted vocals at the end of the song. This ethereal nature is echoed throughout the track with hauntingly beautiful backing vocals, delivered by Nikki on bass and Robert on guitar, which embolden the spirit of this song.

Initially this track was rushed together as a set list filler, something to prolong the 5 pieces’ stage presence, however after it was used as an opener to their live debut Dreaming was met with enthusiasm that would see crowds chanting for an encore.

Drian’s debut single, released earlier this year on the 26th August, Keep Us Alive is distinctivley different to this track in the sense it is more upbeat, it is exhilarating to listen to, forcing you awake to face whatever reality you have built for yourself. A product of post pandemic pent up energy this song is about vowing for better, for repairing what is irreplaceable. It demands a crowd to jump.

Jordon, Robert,Adam,Nikki and Nathan.

Formed in November 2021 Drian’s energetic reputation was cemented after a slew of live gigs, establishing them as true indie pioneers. The quintet is made up of Jordon, frontman and vocalist, Robert on guitar, Adam on lead guitar, Nikki on bass and Nathan on drums. With their debut single already reaching over 6k streams it is clear that this band are one for the playlists.
